My friends; Rob and Cindy, are forresters that live near Mt. Magazine in Arkansas. http://www.mountmagazinestatepark.com/
Wow what a beautifuil place. Rob and Cindy took us to the lodge where we had a very nice dinner, and a fire that we spotted while looking into the valley turned out to be a lightening strike that took a few days to put out. The deer were standing across the road from the lodge when we arrived, and didn't seem too concerned for their safety! (Bet they have hunting season dates in their DNA! lol)
The lodge is well worth a visit if you are in the area, it is beautiful, definately off the beaten path and reasonably priced!

Guns and Jesus
I always thought Virginia was part of the bible belt... but after taking our trip across country, I am thinking we are the last notch on it.
I started to take pictures but decided I don't want to contribute to the feeling the signs give me, the main one being guilt. We saw signs about abortion that were so offensive I wonder what makes anyone feel they have a right to say such judgmental things. It's one thing to voice your opinion, but damning people really isn't our job in my opinion.
I wonder if those types of people would say yes to the death penalty, feel it's OK to discriminate against any person, place or thing... feel it is OK to force their life style on other countries whether they want a change or not. Unfortunately I know many of 'those types of folks' that would and do. Everyday.
The 2 stores that shared a building in Tennessee were: GUNRUNNERS and Jesus is LORD ... and the subtitle under that was: Jesus is LORD, We buy Guns! What message are they trying to send? What does that translate into for kids growing up and reading that message everyday? We also saw a billboard in a corn field in Kansas that had Jesus eating corn, he had a big ole smile on his face... and then there was this one... jesus holding wheat! What is the message trying to convey... cause I just am not getting it...?

Checkerboard Mesa
Deep furrows in the shape of a checkerboard game, took millions of years to cut into the sandstone of Checkerboard. The horizontal furrows were made during the Jurassic period by wind-blown sands of huge ancient dunes spread out over land in place of the massive monoliths you see in Zion today. A freeze and thaw process is responsible for gradually widening the furrows along vertical joints. Notice that the carvings are always on the north side where snow takes longer to melt. The vertical slits were created much later after brittle rock had formed. There are etched patterns on smaller surfaces in the park, such as along the East Rim and Hidden Gardens. Past the east side of the park along US-89 between Kanab and Mt. Carmel Jct. evidence of crossbedding can also be found.
